Your results indicate that you have gone through a surgical menopause.

From your answers we can see that you're aged 50-60 and that you have gone through a surgical menopause. This is where you go into the menopause immediately after the removal of your ovaries.

There is evidence suggesting that if you have a surgical menopause, you may have more severe symptoms than a natural menopause, as the levels of all the hormones made by the ovaries will suddenly drop - including oestrogen and testosterone. The long-term health risks of the menopause include osteoporosis and heart disease.

HRT (if you're not taking it already), can help prevent osteoporosis and heart disease as well as managing symptoms of the menopause. If you have been advised not to take HRT, there are plenty of other options to help manage menopause symptoms as well as the long-term health risks of the menopause.

We would advise talking to a doctor if you are having symptoms that bother or concern you and don't forget to mention any vaginal symptoms (like vaginal dryness and soreness) and bladder symptoms as they may need separate treatment.

How did we arrive at this assessment?

To assess where you are in the menopause transition, we have looked at your answers to the questions including age, bleeding pattern, symptoms, previous gynaecological surgery, hormone use, and more. For your symptoms in particular, we used the Greene Climacteric Scale (GCS). This is a verified measurement tool that is used by practitioners internationally, and that we have reproduced with permission.

Studies have shown that women who score over 12 on the GCS are likely to be menopausal, but it’s possible to score lower than this and still be menopausal.

The symptoms don’t all happen at the same time during the menopause transition, so the scale just gives a snapshot of how things are for you at the moment. This is a good reason to repeat the questionnaire after 6-12 months (or sooner if you feel that your symptoms are rapidly changing).

Your symptoms explained

Below you’ll see a short summary of each of your symptoms. Follow the links to our website where you’ll find free, detailed, evidence-based information and advice that tells you:
  • about each symptom in detail
  • how many women experience it (and for how long)
  • how to treat it.
These resources are super helpful and informative, so please make the most of them.

There may be other reasons for your symptoms, and a questionnaire – however detailed – is no substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Please use the information given here with careful thought, and talk to a doctor if you have any concerns, questions or queries about any worrying or persistent symptoms.

Think about your lifestyle and, if relevant, work environment

It's good to look at our lifestyle at any stage of life. Exercise is a great place to start, as is looking at your diet and alcohol intake. The NHS can help you stop smoking if you would like to quit.

If you work, you could think about your work environment too. For example making sure you have access to water, a fan or an open window in case you start to experience hot flushes.

Keep track of your results

Most women find that their symptoms change as they approach and go through the menopause transition. For this reason, we recommend retaking the questionnaire in 6-12 months (or sooner, if your symptoms are changing more quickly). If you haven't already, it’s a good idea to create an account on our website so that you can save your results and compare them over time.

Why not share our Menopause Questionnaire?

We love helping women better understand the menopause, their symptoms and what they can do to treat them. Also, every women who completes our questionnaire will contribute to our collective understanding of women's experience of the menopause. The more women of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds that complete our questionnaire, the better our collective understanding will be.
