Typical Age for Menopause

The average age for reaching menopause is 51, but a normal range is between 45 and 55. Menopause aged 40-44 is an early menopause and menopause aged below 40 is called premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).  Premature ovarian insufficiency or early menopause may run in families. The age range may be influenced by various factors including genetics, lifestyle, and overall health.  

The Lead-up to Menopause

Perimenopause is the period leading up to menopause and usually occurs on average 5 years before the last menstrual period. During this stage, women may experience irregular menstrual cycles, hot flushes, sleep disturbances, mood swings and other symptoms of oestrogen deficiency. These changes typically begin in the mid-to-late 40s, but can begin earlier in the age range of the late 30s to early 40s. It’s important for women to monitor these symptoms as they provide the first indications of the approaching menopause.

Lifestyle and health are significant factors that can influence the age of natural menopause. Smoking can lead to an earlier onset, while higher body mass index (BMI) may be associated with later menopause.
